How to Create Tags in Google Tag Manager

It’s the big question: how did we create the google tags to track the conversions and the results from our digital campaigns?

This is the recipe – again:

Before you start:

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ADDED YOUR GOOGLE ANALYTICS and / or TAG

Step 1: Create a Google tag

Start by creating a Google tag to send data to your Analytics property.

  1. Open Google Tag Manager
  2. Select the container you want to configure. Open the Tags menu.
  3. Create a New tag. Enter a name for the tag at the top (e.g., “Google tag configuration – example.com”).
  4. In the Tag Configuration box, select Google tag.
  5. Configure your tag. In the field Tag ID, enter your Google tag ID.
  6. Optional: You can set up additional configuration options to govern how your Google tag communicates with its destinations. If you set up the Google tag and want to keep all its default settings, you can now skip to step 2

Step 2: Create a trigger

Next, set up a trigger to load the Google tag when someone loads your website.

  1. To ensure that the Google tag fires before other triggers, click Triggering and use the Initialization – All pages trigger. Learn more about Page triggers.
  2. Name the tag and Save the tag configuration.

CREATE A TAG IN GOOGLE TAG MANAGER

  1. Create a landing page tag – to track page visits (or button clicks)

1. CREATE A LANDING PAGE TAG

  • Create a New Tag: Navigate to the “Tags” section in your GTM dashboard and click on “New”. This will start the process of creating a new tag.
  • Configure the Tag:
    • Tag Type: Choose the type of tag you want to create. For example, if you’re setting up Google Analytics tracking, you would select “Google Analytics: GA4”. For other platforms like Google Ads, Facebook Pixel, or custom HTML tags, select the appropriate tag type from the list.
    • Tag Configuration: Depending on the type of tag you’ve selected, you’ll need to fill in specific details. For a Google Analytics tag, for instance, you’ll need your Google Analytics Tracking ID, which can be found in your Google Analytics account under Admin → Property Settings.
    • For a Google Analytics tag, you might also need to configure additional settings such as “Track Type” (usually “Page View” for basic page tracking), and any additional fields like setting up cross-domain tracking or custom dimensions.
  • Set Up a Trigger:
    • To specify when this tag should fire, you need to set up a trigger. For landing page tracking, you might want a trigger that fires on all page views if it’s a single landing page, or on some page views if you want it to fire only when certain conditions are met (like viewing specific URLs).
    • Click on “Triggering” and then “New” to create a new trigger. For a basic landing page view trigger, you can choose the “Page View” trigger type and configure it to fire on “All Page Views” or “Some Page Views” depending on your needs. If you choose “Some Page Views”, you’ll need to set up conditions such as “Page URL contains /your-landing-page-path”.

AFTER CREATING A TAG:

Save and Test the Tag

Once you’ve configured your tag and trigger, name your tag meaningfully (like “GA – Landing Page View”) and save it. Before making it live, use the “Preview” mode in GTM to test if the tag is firing correctly on your landing page.

Publish Changes

After confirming that the tag works as intended in the Preview mode, go back to the GTM dashboard and publish the changes to make the tag active on your site.
